In 2004, the Presbyterian Children & Orphans Society contacted all the Presbyterian Churches in the Province to see if they would be willing to consider offering this vital service to separated families and their children. Rev Peter Fleming, minister of 1st Coleraine Presbyterian Church was very interested in enabling a recently refurbished Youth Centre (known as ‘The House’) to be available for wider use, to serve the needs of the local community. Together with NINCC (Northern Ireland Network of Child Contact Centres) and NACCC (National Assosiation of Child Contact Centres), along with the encouragement of Mr Alcorn (District Judge), led to an inaugural meeting. Sufficient interest and vision for this work enabled a Management Committee to be formed and a co-ordinator (Shirley McPhillimy) was appointed in January 2006. 35 Volunteers were recruited, interviewed, trained and police checked. The Coleraine Child Contact Centre opened on Saturday 4th April 2006, with 4 families. To date over 300 families have availed of the service. In 2007, funding became available from the Department of HSC & SP, to support existing Child Contact Centres and to provide satellite centres. There had been requests to expand this service to Ballycastle. With the help and support of Youthlinks suitable premises were identified, 11 volunteers trained, and the launch of the Ballycastle Centre was held in November 2008. The 1st family attended in March 2009.
